Jim Calbeck, who as Convention Chairman, began planning and negotiating arrangements with the Marriott Hotel many months ahead of our event. Jim reserved convention space, hotel rooms and negotiated room rates, prepared posters, flyers, and on, and on! Dave Moore devoted countless hours as Contest Chairman during this period preparing contest categories, obtaining ribbons, banners, and organizing the judging of one of the best contests we have had in recent memory. Auction Chairman, Bob Wood, organized three very efficiently managed auctions with his crew of volunteers who worked in sync like never before. Behind the scenes, Web Master Steve Casiola, Grid Leak Editor Charles Knobloch, and Bill Kendrick kept the web site and mailings up to date and on time to inform all concerned of the coming events. HVRA Treasurer Tom Burslem, not only managed the convention expenses, but had to juggle Christmas party and Houston Heritage Society expenditures at the same time and kept all within our budget. Typical rectifier tubes are half wave rectifiers in that they rectify one half of the sinusoidal AC wave. This raises the question, why are they called AC / DC receivers? As it turns out, some cities were still wired with DC current as late as the 1950's and these radios could be operated from either source. Common tapped filament rectifier tubes of this genre include the 35Z5, 35Y4, and others such as miniatures 35W4, 36AM3, etc. The filament tap provided a current source to illuminate a dial lamp that often burns out. Some sets use these tubes, but do not have a dial lamp, and instead use a 38 to 40 ohm dropping resistor in its place. When the dial lamp burns out, or the dropping resistor opens, the filament voltage across that section of the tapped filament will jump from 6 to 8 volts to around 15 volts as the dial lamp acts as a resistor in parallel with a portion of the filament (fig.2). This voltage increase will shorten the life of the tube. Replace burned out dial lamps such as #40 or #47 with new ones and save the tube. Also, some tube testers may fail to identify one or more of the tapped filament rectifier tubes as defective if a break occurs between the filament center tap and its respective pin. A tube with that problem may light up in a tester, and perhaps test good. However, when placed back in the radio, the tubes all light up, but the dial lamp will suddenly flash and burn out. You can see in (fig.1) why this would occur as the dial lamp now becomes a plate resistor and "poof".
